With a slim job market in summer of 1989, Brian Scudamore, an 18 year-old college student at The University of British Columbia, was sitting at a McDonald’s drive-thru waiting for his order. In front of him, a truck full of junk appeared. Immediately, Brian had a vision creating his own summer job. He spent $700 on an old pick-up truck and began “The Rubbish Boys”, a junk removal service with the slogan “We’ll Stash Your Trash in a Flash!” Brian dropped out of college to run the growing business and after three years of success, decided to take the business one step further. His goal was to make the company, along with its phone number a household name. Today, the Vancouver, Canada-based company, 1-800-GOT-JUNK, is the largest junk removal service in North America and has 300 locations in four countries.
Jeff Sharpe, a Martinsville-native and graduate of Radford University, learned of the company and in October 2007 purchased the Roanoke franchise, the seventh and final Virginia franchise for the company. Located at 102 Boulevard in the southwest quadrant of the City of Roanoke , 1-800-GOT-JUNK prides itself on a professional, quick and easy way for customers to rid their households of clutter without a dumpster rental. From old furniture, computers, appliances, electronics and construction debris…the staff takes care of all the loading, clean-up, hauling and disposal of goods for one price. They promise not to leave without giving your home or office a final sweeping!
